| Will the program affect my Tinnitus? |

We have a number of participants who have (or
who have had) Tinnitus. For some it is helpful, and for some it is not.
It is really impossible to predict as the nature of Tinnitus is very
elusive, even from a medical standpoint. It seems to be more helpful
than not from the feedback we get (and we get quite a bit of it). At this time, the physiological cause or causes of tinnitus are not clear. Several factors have been known to cause or worsen tinnitus if it already exists: noise exposure, wax build-up in the ear canal, certain medications, ear or sinus infections, jaw misalignment, cardiovascular disease, certain types of tumours, osteosclerosis, underactive thyroid, and head and neck trauma. From a treatment standpoint, there are specialized in-the-ear maskers which produce a low-level acoustically shaped sound that can reduce or eliminate the perception of tinnitus. This is not unlike the low frequencies of Holosync. Masking can also produce the phenomenon of "residual inhibition" -- where the reduction or elimination of tinnitus continues for a short time after the masker is removed. In tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), small white noise generators are worn behind or in the ear to help a person learn to ignore or habituate the sounds of their tinnitus. Biofeedback, a technique of teaching people to control certain aspects of body function, such as pulse and temperature, has proven effective in some cases. TMJ treatment can help if the tinnitus is related to a jaw dysfunction. Some drugs ease stress, depression, and sleep difficulties that increase the discomfort of tinnitus. Published studies have shown that 120 to 240 mg a day of pharmaceutical-grade ginkgo extract can alleviate tinnitus. |
